The Mayan civilization started more than 3,000 years ago and was quite sophisticated for its time. The Mayans flourished for centuries before their civilization mysteriously collapsed about 900 AD. During its time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the Western Hemisphere. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya.
